Texas is where American hotshot hauling largely lives, because the oilfield created the demand for it. Drilling and completion work generates constant need for parts, equipment and components delivered faster than a semi can be scheduled, and a gooseneck with a driver already in the region is worth real money to an operator losing money on a stopped rig.
The problem is that everyone knows this. The Texas hotshot market is crowded, and the general freight and partial loads posted on the boards are priced accordingly. Operators who compete for those struggle. Operators who work expedite and oilfield support do not.
What we watch for you
- Expedite over general freight. Time-critical work is where hotshot has a real advantage. Competing with dry vans on price for a partial is a losing strategy.
- Weight verified before booking. Legal payload on most goosenecks is lower than operators assume once truck, trailer and fuel are subtracted. An overweight ticket in Texas costs more than several loads earn.
- Permian and Eagle Ford positioning. Oilfield regions pay well but can strand you. Outbound density is checked before every inbound.
- Deadhead discipline. Hotshot fuel economy is better than a semi but the rates are lower, so a long empty run does proportionally more damage.
