Free CDL practice tests

Study for your commercial driver's licence with free practice tests. See the right answer and the reason after every question.

How the CDL tests work

To get a commercial driver's licence you pass written knowledge tests, then a skills test with a pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control and a road test. You first earn a commercial learner's permit by passing the knowledge tests. Endorsements such as air brakes, hazmat, tanker and passengers add their own tests.

Make your practice count

  • Study your state's CDL manual first. It is the source of your state test.
  • Take a quick test, read every explanation, and then retake it.
  • Aim for 80 percent or higher every time before you book the real test.
  • Learn the reasons, not the answers. The wording on the real test will differ.

Common questions

Are these CDL practice tests free?

Yes. They are free and need no sign-up. You see the correct answer and the reason after every question.

What is the pass mark?

Federal rules require at least 80 percent on each CDL knowledge test. Your state may set its own question count and details, so read your state's CDL manual.

Are these the real CDL test questions?

No. They are original practice questions written to teach the same ideas. They are not copied from any state test, and your real test will be worded differently.

Do I need training before I take the CDL test?

Federal entry-level driver training rules require many first-time applicants to complete training with a provider on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry before taking the CDL skills test or the hazmat endorsement knowledge test. Check with your state licensing agency for how this applies to you.

Which test should I take first?

Start with General Knowledge, which every CDL applicant takes. Then take Air Brakes if you will drive air-brake vehicles, and HazMat if you want the hazmat endorsement.
