California administers engine and emissions rules through CARB that restrict which trucks may operate in the state, and these go beyond federal requirements. Verify your specific truck against current CARB requirements directly before booking California freight. This verification has to come from you — a dispatcher cannot do it for you, and a non-compliant truck can be penalised and placed out of service.
California's reefer economy runs on the Central Valley and the Salinas Valley, two of the most productive agricultural regions in the world. From late spring through autumn, produce moves out of Fresno, Bakersfield, Salinas and the surrounding areas to every major market in the country, and the eastbound rates during peak harvest are among the strongest reefer rates you'll see anywhere.
The rest of the year, reefer works food distribution out of the Inland Empire and the ports, at considerably more ordinary rates.

- Harvest calendars, not the load board. By the time rates spike on the board, the trucks are already there. We start pointing you toward the region ahead of the window.
- Inbound priced against outbound. California inbound rates are soft because so much freight lands there. The inbound only makes sense against a confirmed strong outbound.
- Temperature terms in writing. Set point, continuous versus cycle and pre-cool requirements confirmed on the rate confirmation, not discovered at the dock.
- Lumper terms agreed upfront. Produce facilities use lumpers heavily. Who pays and how you're reimbursed goes on the con.
- Broker credit checked hard. Produce season attracts brokers you have not heard of. We check credit and days-to-pay before booking.
