Hours of service and the ELD: the clock that runs every truck

Every load you book has to fit inside a driver's legal hours. This lesson teaches the federal rules, the electronic logging device that records them, and the dispatcher's craft of reading a clock and planning a trip that is legal, on time and safe.

In this lesson

  • The four limits for a property-carrying driver are 11 hours driving, a 14-hour window, a 30-minute break after 8 hours of driving, and 60 hours in 7 days or 70 hours in 8 days.
  • "Available hours" means the smallest of three numbers: drive time left, window left and cycle time left. Plan with the smallest one.
  • Plan drive time at 50 miles per hour, not the speed limit. Traffic, fuel, scales and loading eat the rest.
  • Never ask a driver to run past their hours. Federal coercion rules (49 CFR 390.6) make pressure itself a violation, even if the driver refuses.
