In this lesson
- A load passes from shipper to broker to carrier to driver to consignee. Money flows the opposite way, and slowly: the carrier funds the trip for weeks before a dollar arrives.
- Six documents carry every load: the rate confirmation, the bill of lading, the proof of delivery, the invoice, and when needed the lumper receipt and scale ticket. Lose one and you lose money.
- Spot freight is priced load by load on the open market. Contract freight is priced in advance for a lane. Dispatchers for small carriers live mostly in spot.
- Brokers earn the gap between what the shipper pays and what the carrier accepts. Knowing their math makes you a better negotiator.
- Rates follow supply and demand for trucks in a region. Learn to read tight and soft markets instead of memorising numbers.
