Module 4Running the freight115 min read

Rate confirmations and accessorials

The rate confirmation is the contract for every load, and accessorials are the extra charges most carriers never collect. This lesson takes a full sample rate con apart line by line, shows which clauses to negotiate or refuse, then teaches every accessorial from detention to border fees: how to ask, how to prove it, how to invoice it and how to win when the broker pushes back.

In this lesson

  • The rate confirmation is a written contract. What is printed on it beats what was said on the phone, so you read every line before the driver moves and fix every mismatch in writing.
  • Accessorials are paid only when three things line up: the charge was agreed in writing before the load, the driver captured proof at the moment it happened, and the invoice reached the broker before the deadline in the rate con.
  • Detention, layover, TONU and lumper are the big four. Learn their free time, their trigger, their proof and their deadline for every broker you work with.
  • Every rate, fee, free-time figure and deadline in this lesson is an example. Terms vary by broker, lane, season and the carrier's own contract, and the rate con you are holding is the only number that counts.
