In this lesson
- Always work in all-in miles: loaded miles plus the empty miles to reach the pickup.
- Every truck has a cost per mile built from fixed costs (run whether the wheels turn or not) and variable costs (rise with every mile). A load that does not clear it loses money, however good it looks.
- Rate per mile is a screening number. Profit per day and revenue per truck per week are the numbers that decide whether the carrier survives.
- Fuel is the biggest variable cost and moves weekly. A 50 cent change in diesel moves a typical truck's break-even by about 8 cents a mile.
- All the numbers in this lesson are illustrations. Use the carrier's real costs, never an average from the internet.
