Module 3Finding and pricing loads120 min read

Negotiating and booking loads

The posted rate is an opening bid, and the broker who posted it expects you to argue. This lesson gives you the psychology, the structure, the numbers and the exact words: how to set a walk-away figure from cost per mile, how brokers price a load, how to anchor and counter, what to trade when the rate will not move, and the full booking sequence from the first call to the dispatch sheet, with twelve real conversations analyzed line by line.

In this lesson

  • Negotiation starts before you dial. Floor, target and ask come from the truck's cost per mile, not from how the broker sounds.
  • The posted rate is rarely the real rate. Brokers price from the shipper's rate down, and most posts carry room that only a prepared caller gets.
  • A number with a reason moves a broker. A number alone, or pressure, does not. Deadhead, timing, market and service are the four honest reasons.
  • When the rate will not move, trade terms: detention, layover, TONU, quick pay and fuel surcharge are all money.
  • Nothing is booked until the rate confirmation matches the call and the driver has confirmed the appointment. Never release a truck on a verbal deal.
  • Honesty is a tactic that works. No invented competing offers, no double brokering, no fake availability. Brokers remember who was straight with them.
