In this lesson
- Match the freight to the equipment, not the other way round. A load a truck cannot legally or safely carry is not a load, whatever the rate.
- The federal limits on the Interstate system are 80,000 lb gross, 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem, and the truck's real payload is what is left after the tractor, trailer, fuel and driver are weighed.
- Dry van is the biggest and most competitive segment. Reefer, flatbed, step deck, RGN, tanker and car hauler pay differently because they need more equipment, more skill and carry more risk.
- Ask every carrier for an exact equipment profile (type, length, deck height, tare weight, accessories, endorsements) before you search a single load, and keep it in writing.
- Weight, dimensions and securement are where new dispatchers make the expensive errors. Learn the math in this lesson and you avoid most of them.
